When you come back in from the winter chill And your cheeks are red, and your eyes are bright I take you in my arms and savour you in all your beauty I touch your skin, it’s so cold, baby Hope we stay as strong as we are now, my love Hope we stay as one down the misty road If it’s in the stars that we’ll lose control Wait for the mist to clear I’ll win you back Body and soul When I’m drunk as hell and we’re walking home And you guide me back with a heavy heart You walk me through the dark streets, reining me in from the cars I hope you know you’re too good for me Hope we stay as strong as we are now, my love Hope we stay as one down the misty road If it’s in the stars that we’ll lose control Wait for the mist to clear I’ll win you back Broken or whole Yes, we’ve had some wars and some skirmishes But they’ve always ended in true love I have made you seethe in anger, writhe in jealousy But our love has brought you back to me Hope we stay as strong as we are now, my love Hope we stay as one down the misty road If it’s in the stars that we’ll lose control Wait for the mist to clear I’ll win you back © Ali George 2019

Another Girl 03:14
Sunset on Serifos The sky’s indigo tonight We’ve walked the beaches here And we have swam the bays I’ve fallen in love with another girl And she looks just like you But she comes alive in the island air And she smiles everywhere she goes Driving on broken roads We go exploring in the North Where wild winds blow the sands astray And no one is around I’ve fallen in love with another girl And she clings tight to me As we try to stand as the waves crash down And she smiles every time the sea winds blow Handfuls of grass seed fall through my fingers As I watch a woman enchanted by her own homeland I can see a woman enchanted by her own homeland Sailing by the Cyclades We leave Serifos behind Your tears are testament To what it means to say goodbye I’ve fallen in love with another girl And she holds hands with me As we watch the island slip from view © Ali George 2017

Winter falls on a summer girl In a foreign land in the West She’s walking down to catch that bus She’ll be feeling that wintery kiss once again She says that she stays In this cold land in part for me Oh, my sweet little one I think that’s a fine and foolish thing to do Whoa Oooh, oooh Winter falls on a summer girl As the bitter winds kiss her skin We’re walking back from town tonight And my words are cruel as the wind once again They’re just foolish words They are nothing compared To how I feel deep beneath my disguise Where pleasure and pain And passion reside Whoa Winter falls on a summer girl So, I hide her away from the cold The bitter winds – they scream and sing But our song is as sweet as the first wild primrose Oooh, oooh Oooh, oooh Oooh, oooh © Ali George 2017

I’m in love with the high rolling hills to the west of my home I walk there alone In rain or shine Just today I was treading through the fields I was watching my boots As they tore up the shoots of winter grass This is just what I’ve been needing To be free in the wild – what a feeling Every moment I’m out there I’m healing Oooh Working hard almost every single day isn’t doing much for me I still have no money and few prospects So, I’m grateful that I’ve got this one bright thing I can walk into the hills, through forests and fields And ease my heart This is just what I’ve been needing To be free in the wild – what a feeling This is just what I’ve been needing To be free in the wild – what a feeling Every moment I’m out there I’m healing © Ali George 2017

And you fail in your search for the absent fire That was lost many years before your search had begun And you rise for a few short hours, drinking steadily But the fall will far outweigh the meagre heights you will attain At the crowded bar And you wind up crashing like a fuel-drained plane On a mountainside And she waits by the phone, she’s petrified She has spoken to her family and her friends in trepidation Then she stands, puts her coat around her trembling shoulders And she goes out into darkness and to danger on this night In search of you And she finds you broken like a torn-up train On a final ride Oooh, oooh And you fail As you rise And you fall And you wind up crashing like a fuel-drained plane On a mountainside © Ali George 2019

It’s a song of love that flows when I’m with you And it tastes like wine and fresh spring water too Oh lover, listen to it wake Oh, it’s a song of love that sleeps so lightly now When I’m kissing you as you lean against the door jamb And you look so good that I’m almost a happy man Oh lover, I don’t need a drink Oh, I just need your loving arms to hold me tightly now Oh, ooh It’s a song of love that rattles in my bones And it smells like summer bonfires back at home Oh lover, listen to it play Oh, it’s a song of love that sighs so sweetly now © Ali George 2017

Walking through the forest With my girl at my side Is a fine experience Let’s just hope the sun won’t try to hide Now we’re hand in hand Stepping over the stream We are fencing with birch switches I cut your hand by accident, and you scream One kiss for you from my hound Two kisses from your man And you’re smiling once again I’ll always comfort you if I can We go down to a clearing Where there lies a hidden lake And I kiss you beside the bank Leaving here could prove a bad mistake Yellow light beams on your face As the clouds depart You’re the gentlest girl I know And I love your healer’s heart Walking through the forest We are free from all pain Let us cherish these moments For who knows when true joy will come again © Ali George 2018

Dying grass sways in the perpetual wild winds (Blowing like they’re trying to tip the car) Platys Yialos Love that’s just for us Platys Yialos Love that’s just for us Oh, oooh Twilight sky Lilac washing pale to green Moonlight glow Sparkling the waves out in the bay Platys Yialos Love that’s just for us Platys Yialos Love that’s just for us Oh, oooh The crooked road is winding on home As we leave today behind It’s getting dark and the silence is growing But you’re on my mind The crooked road is winding on home As we leave today behind It’s getting dark and the silence is growing But you’re on my mind You’re on my mind You’re on my mind © Ali George 2019

about

'The foundation of thIs album was the core two-piece set up of myself and double-bassist Tom Allen (The Zen Hussies, Bartoune). We had been rehearsing and gigging together for around four years, but we never got around to doing a recording session until November of 2019. I have always loved the combo of acoustic guitar and double bass since I first heard recordings of John Martyn and Danny Thompson.

There are two sides to the album in terms of style: a quieter, acoustic side, in which we drew inspiration from folk, blues and jazz; and a rockier, more aggressive side. With the quieter songs like “Another Girl” we drafted in Bath based pianist Jools Scott, who added his own subtle touches. For the rockier songs like “Melanie Brown”, drummer Josh West joined us, painting in his own crafted intricacies. It was the first time I have recorded with a drummer as a solo artist, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Ruby Brown - who has featured on three of my previous albums – joined us on three songs to do some stunning backing vocals. For the title track I asked the extraordinary Beth Porter to accompany me on cello. The beautiful cover painting was made by my father Andrew Scott George.

"Platys Yialos" translates roughly as "wide beach" in Greek. Some of this album is about the Greek island of Serifos, where the beach of "Platys Yialos" itself lies.'
