about

“'Winter Laments' is an EP (mini-album) I made in 2003. It includes eight songs. It was recorded on a 4-track analogue recorder over the space of a couple of weeks. It was heavily influenced by Neil Young's "After the Goldrush" and Cat Steven's "Tea for the Tillerman".

Before I began recording I had made two lists of my current unrecorded songs (split into best and worst). I intended to record the best of these songs in a professional studio, and the weaker songs at home as demos, with no intention of releasing them. I recorded the demos first. In the end I never got around to going to the studio to record the ‘best songs’, as I had lost interest in them. They were eventually forgotten. Meanwhile I realised the demos had a certain charm, so the songs on the two lists switched places, and I released 'Winter Laments'! It remains one of my favourite efforts to this day.”
