"Hard to Find" is about the struggles of everyday people, who are trying to find a way to pursue their dreams, amid the pressures of work, the restrictions of lockdown, and the chaos of modern day living.
This track was written and recorded during lockdown. Ali was living in Greece, and his producer, Josh Clark (Kate Rusby, Damien O’Kane) was living near Bath in the UK. Ali travelled to the UK to record his parts for the track. The rest of the recording was done remotely, after Ali returned to Greece.
The award-winning Beth Porter of The Bookshop Band (winners of the best original music award at the British Animation Awards this year) recorded her stunning cello part in her own home studio in Scotland. This track also features backing vocals and trumpet (an instrument that’s never featured in any of Ali's music, until now) from Ali's former bandmate and long-time collaborator, Dexter Selboy! After Ali laid down some finishing touches to the recording in Greece, the track was finally produced and mastered in the UK.
lyrics
In these crazy days there's not enough time
And it's so hard to know
Hard to know what to do
I get frustrated
You get frustrated too
So, I drink the weekend away
And you sleep the weekend away in a flash
It's so hard to find our way in this darkness
We're both trying to weave our own dreams in this darkness
I'm so hard to live with here just now
And I'm so hard to love
I'm so hard to love, babe
And I'm so temperamental
I change like clouds
It must get hard to care
It must be hard to bear such a fool
It's so hard to find our way in this darkness
We're both trying to weave our own dreams in this darkness
Oh, my love, we're growing old
But don't feel sorry for us
'Cause everybody in the world is in the same boat
Painters, puppeteers, mountaineers all crying for
Dancers, glass blowers, pumpkin growers all vying for
Basket weavers, alpine skiers, they're all dying for
The time to do that thing we love
That thing we care about
It's so hard to find our way in this darkness
We're both trying to weave our own dreams in this darkness
It's so hard to find our way in this darkness
We're both trying to weave our own dreams in this darkness
